Hair trends for summer 2018

It doesn’t matter if your hair is long or short, get ready for some serious inspiration overload!

The balayage (which never fails to impress) is becoming much softer with more muted tones. Stay 1-3 shades darker to lighter to keep this look on trend. Having a 1-3 shades difference is still noticeable but much softer (and more gentle to the hair) leaving your blend seamless and your hair looking natural and healthy. Copper tones are going to be everywhere this summer!

Statement middle partings! Okay, so this look isn’t for everyone (or for everyone’s face shape) but if your bold by nature this sleek look can become instantly edgy.

Fringes and bangs. Almost all the Victoria secrets models went and had there bangs cut in after the runway. Most went with a super soft and gentle finish but Bella Hadid went more punk rock with short, thick, textured and bold bangs that made her cheekbones look super sharp.

Glossy gold tones are back! Stay away from the super high maintenance ice white look and do a Blake Lively. Don’t forget to keep it classy not brassy with Paul Mitchell’s colour protect shampoo and conditioner.

Curls are IN! At last, we are embracing natural curls. The bigger the better! Think 80s perm but remember frizz is OUT. Thanks to Paul Mitchell’s curls range you don’t have to sacrifice the hairs condition to get the volume needed for this look and you can keep frizz at bay.

Messy buns are still in but the neater more timeless classic ballerina bun in making its come back. Keep it small, tight and high on the head (goodbye doughnuts hello natural hair). To really add a modern twist on this why not plat your hair first and then wrap in Into a tight bun?

So now we know what’s in, what’s out?

Thankfully not much, hair really is another accessory so it’s all about your personal style and what makes you feel good.

Grey hair – if you really want to keep this super high maintenance and hard to achieve colour why not try more charcoal tones? It will reflect the light better giving the hair something grey tones can’t achieve, shine!

Bold balayage – balayage is still very much in, it’s just gone more natural looking. Trying to get super dark roots to blend in with super light ends is near impossible on most hair types and it’s the reason why almost all photos of bold balayage have the model wearing her hair curly, curls hide a multitude of sins! If you want to keep the balayage we recommend going with the current trend of more natural colours that blend together perfectly.

Vibrant colours – while not strictly out of fashion we do recommend going to a more washed out and muted down look in order to stay strictly on trend (however we do still love bold and bright tones!) if you do want to stay vibrant and bold we recommend using the new VIRAL colour shampoos, there come in loads of different colours to help keep your reds, blues, purples and greens vibrant and fresh in between salon visits.

Gem colours

Another thing you may have noticed last year was how colours were named after food and drinks such as coffee, caramel, chocolate, honey etc… As hair stylists, we do this to help our clients vision the colour without saying something like “your colour is 9NB and 9G” which really doesn’t sound that fun!

This year look out for colours being named after gemstones such as flawless diamond, quartz, citrine and ruby red!

Team Talk on CPR by Aimee Moon

Today I had the opportunity to talk to my colleagues about something very important to me, CPR.
This is a subject very close to home for me. As I, my mum, aunt and grand mum all have the same heart condition known as LQT. Monitored this condition is relativity safe, however my aunt has suffered from three cardiac arrests. The good news is she has survived all three thanks to the people around her knowing how to give CPR.

30,000 people in the uk will suffer from an out of hospital heart attack every year, 20% of these will happen in a public place such as a town centre, hair salon or while out for a run.
12 people under 35 die every week from cardiac arrest and 270 children per year.

It is believed that in a room of 100 people only 43 on them will know how to give CPR and only 10 of them will be confident enough to preform it.

Every minute without CPR reduces the chances of survival by 10%, in urban areas the wait time for emergency services is 10minutes. 40% to 100% of people will die in this time.

The British heart foundation believes that people lack the skills, abilities and confidence to preform CPR and are making it there mission to have CPR added to secondary school curriculum.
In some cases preforming CPR can double the chance of surviving a out of hospital heart attack or cardiac arrest and so it is vital witnesses to one have the skills and confidence to step in and help.

I wanted to talk to the team to show them the importance of learning CPR and to show them some videos on how to preform it.
I also spoke to the team about public AEDs, I explained what they were, where our closest one was and showed them a video about how to use one.

Below is the link for the video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQNNOh8c8ks

National Healthy Eating week at the Grove

As part of the BNF Healthy Eating week running from the 12th to 16th June 2017, The Grove Experience decided to dedicate their weekly team meeting to promoting the importance of eating a healthy well balanced diet.

We Provided a platter of delicious seasonal and exotic fruits for our team and trainees to enjoy. They were also encouraged to complete a food diary for one day during the week where all food and drink consumed was documented as well as all physical activity.

This was followed up by a discussion to see where changes could be made to improve their diets and lifestyles to make them healthier.

8 Tips for healthy Eating

  1. Base your meals on starchy carbohydrates – they should make up over one third of the food you eat.
  2. Eat lots of Fruit and vegetables – at least five portions a day and make sure you choose a wide variety.
  3. Eat More Fish – at least two a week include at least one portion of oily fish such as Salmon, mackerel , Trout, Herring, fresh tuna, Sardines, pilchards.
  4.  Cut down on saturated fats and sugar – such as hard cheese, cakes, biscuits, sausages, cream, butter, Lard, Pies, Fizzy drinks, alcohol, sugary breakfast cereals and pastries.
  5. Eat Less Salt – No More than 6g a day for adults. Remember that about three quarters of salt we eat is already in the food we buy such as breakfast cereal, soaps, breads and sauces.
  6. Get active and be a healthy weight – set some time aside for physical activity, walk instead of driving where possible, try something new, swimming and cycling are great ways to keep fit and can be great fun.
  7. Don’t Get Thirsty – Drink plenty of fluids to stop you getting dehydrated. The Government recommends  SIX to EIGHT glasses of water a day.
  8. Don’t Skip Breakfast – Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day!!.Breakfast like a King – Lunch like a Queen – supper like a pauper.

Charity Trip to Africa with The CoCos Foundation

In August and October 2018 five members of the Grove Experience team will be traveling to South Africa on a two week charity trip. We will help build two houses for orphaned children with HIV .

COCO’S FOUNDATION BUILD4THEFUTURE

The Build4TheFuture programme is designed to help young people (both in the UK and internationally) to understand the world around them.

To understand “anything is possible.”

VOLUNTEER TO HELP CHILDREN IN SOUTH AFRICA

Build4TheFuture provides homes and shelter for child-headed families in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa.

What do we mean by a child-headed family? Families where orphans are living on their own and without the love, guidance and support of parents.

In this region there are about 9,000 orphans. Many of their parents have died from AIDS or related illnesses, and the children live in groups for safety. It is not unusual for 20 children to be living in one house.

We have Five team members joining the charity for trips in 2018.

In august 2018 Emma Hobden & Evie Chapman will be traveling with a larger group to help build a house for a group of children.

In October 2018 three others will travel out. Celina Zomer, Kiki Cavie (with husband Tony) and Gary Young, will be joining a trip to build;ld another house in the same region of KwaZulu-Natal  South Africa.

Over the next 18 months we will be completing a number of events to help raise the money needed to travel out and build the houses. £2,300 each thats a massive £11,500 we need to get before we travel out.

Anything you can do to help, anything you could offer us to raffle or sell or just plain old cash sponsor to our Just giving page would be amazing and very much appreciated.

Have you always wanted to be a hairdresser ?

Always wanted to be a hairdresser?

Love the Hair & beauty industry?, Interested in trends and fashion?
Want to know what its really like to work in a salon without committing to a class room based college course?

Experience Education Academy’s  ‘Cutting Club‘ at The Grove Experience hairdressers in Grove Road in Eastbourne could well be your answer..

The Cutting Club.

The Cutting Club is an after school club for 14 – 15 year olds who while still at school would like to develop some hairdressing experience. The club runs on a Tuesday between 4pm – 6pm and is open to anyone over the age of 14
(application forms are available from the salon or can be downloaded from our website).

The aim of the club which is free to join and free to attend, is to give year 11 pupils a taste of what the hair & beauty industry is about without having to commit to a full time job or college course.

The club run by Sally Deal at the Grove Experience salon covers all aspects of hairdressing, members will get to experience some cutting, perming, colouring, styling, hair-up, smoothing, extensions all at a basic intro level. This allows them to make informed decisions about their future careers while still at school.

The club starts out covering the basic skills working on each other then on to head blocks and then later bringing in models to work on.

For anyone who completes the full programme and stays up to finishing school, they would have a good ground knowledge of hairdressing, which would give them a great head start if they then choose hairdressing as a career.

If they chose to apply to join our full time education NVQ level 2 programme they would be given first option on future positions within the company putting them at the front of the queue.

As a company we do not employ anyone out of college and we are not alone in this so this club gives any potential job applicant at any salon a great advantage when applying for what are now limited salon positions for apprenticeships.

Applications are being taken now for the next intake. Send your application in to the salon or pop in to see Sally.
