I have just finished my level 2 Hair and Media makeup (VRQ) at Sussex downs college, I enjoyed the makeup but realised I had more interest in the hairdressing as I enjoyed it a lot more and was excited to learn new things. I was very happy to be awarded student of the year at the end of the course. While I was at college I had some work experience at gorgeous hair boutique in Hove, where I learned the basics of greeting customers, making refreshments, shampooing and rinsing off colour, I also kept the salon clean and tidy. I really enjoyed my time there and this made me think about looking for an apprenticeship. I am 28 years old and have a daughter.
Before going to college I was working as an assistant manager of a golf club and only ever imagined I would be able to change careers and become a hairdresser. Although I’m a late starter, having my daughter made me realise I have time to do whatever I set my mind to as long as I work hard for it, which is why I applied for college. I enjoyed college but thought an apprenticeship would suit me better as it is more hands on, working with professionals and gaining more experience in a salon environment.
I joined the Grove Experience in October 2016 as an apprentice training towards my NVQ level 3 whilst working on reception. I completed my NVQ level 3 and started working on the salon floor.
I really enjoyed working on the salon floor but after spending most of my time managing reservations I found I actually prefer working with the guests on reservations helping the managers with paperwork, invoices etc, so I changed roles and now work as a full-time receptionist. I have a couple of reception courses coming up and am looking forward to gaining more qualifications and experience being on reservations.
I look forward to seeing you all at the salon.FollowPaegan
